RIBBON BLENDER
Ribbon blenders are highly efficient horizontal mixers used for solid-solid and solid-liquid mixing, utilizing a U-shaped trough and a double helical agitator to create convective, axial flow. They are ideal for powders, granules, and pellets, offering high shear for blending cohesive materials in food, pharma, and chemical applications.
Key Features and Principles
- Agitator Design: Features inner and outer helical ribbons; the outer ribbon moves material from the ends to the center, while the inner ribbon moves it from center to ends, creating a counter-current action for efficient, homogeneous mixing.
- Capacity & Speed: Typically operates at 60–70% capacity with ribbon speeds of 70–100 meters per minute.
- Components: Constructed in stainless steel (SS 304/316) for hygienic applications (GMP standards), typically featuring a U-shaped shell, heavy-duty drive system, and pneumatic or manual bottom discharge valves.
- Working Volume: Best results occur when filled just above the top of the outer ribbon.
Industrial Applications
- Pharmaceuticals: Mixing dry powders, granules, and lubricating pellets.
- Food Industry: Processing dried food products, spice blending, infant formula, and instant drink mixes.
- Chemicals/Cosmetics: Blending ceramics, pesticides, and cosmetic formulas.

Advantages and Limitations
- Advantages: Excellent for dry materials, can handle wet-dry coating, high-intensity mixing, and relatively short batch times.
- Limitations: Possible dead spots exist, and high-shear “pinch points” can occur between the blade and vessel wall.
